Monster Factory Amplification Swamp Thang: High Gain Meets A Clean That Fits Like a Glove.
Don't let the animated .gifs and simple layout of their website fool you -- Monster Factory Amplification doesn't want to waste time polishing up a website when they could be unleashing frighteningly rocking amps instead. Their latest character, Swamp Thang, picks up some urban 'tude after it "dragged itself out of a voodoo swamp."
Raised on a healthy diet of gain, bottom end and presence, Swamp Thang is heavier than a sumo wrestler full of bricks. Best yet, its clean channel was designed to complement the nastiness of the overdrive channel. Monster Home Page

Jack Johnson is back with a new album titled "Sleep Through the Static." For his fifth album, Johnson does a few things that he never has for an album: He plugs in the guitar and records in Los Angeles. By the time the first Acoustic song "Angel" plays on track four, you have to be reminded the album has been electric thus far. It's just the same old Jack, easy going, simple and good. I never got the whole Guitar Hero, Rock Band and their fake guitars playing bullshit games, which require so much practice to master that you may as well use a real guitar to become as good as Satriani. That's why I love the idea of Guitar Rising, which can use any real electric guitar, from a Fender Strat to a Gibson Les Paul. The software teaches you how to play actual songs, tracking your accuracy much like Guitar Hero but your actually playing guitars. See the video at their website software coming sometime in late '08. 2/7/08
The latest Ibanez 'must-have' was small in size but hard to miss at the Ibanez NAMM booth in Anaheim. The multicolor die-cast zinc case of the new Steve Vai signature distortion pedal makes sure it will stand out on even the most crowded pedal board. "However, some players may need less pedals in their rigs if they have a JEMINI," said Lucian Tu of Ibanez. "The JEMINI is beyond versatile, with both TS9 Tubescreamer overdrive as well as the classic distortion tones long associated with Steve Vai. So you can achieve anything from just a subtle bit of overdrive boost to completely full-blown, all-out distorted tones. Check it here 2/6/08

Carvin announces custom amp colors.
Carvin is adding new colored coverings to their guitar amp heads and 4 X 12 cabinets. Available colors are Navy Bronco, Country Western, Brown Marvelon, Gray Buggy Whip, Red Jungle Bark, Silver Bronco, and Hot White Bronco. While I don't use Carvin for anything else but the PA my bass player, John, swears by their equipment putting his 5 string and custom bass rig (1000 watts of ground shaking power) to the acid test almost nightly.

Very Special Car and Guitar Raise $550,000 for Charity. Ford Motor Company and Fender Musical Instruments Corporation made some noise together at the 37th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Arizona, Jan. 12-20, 2008, which racked up more than $88 million in sales and a record-setting attendance of 280,000 automotive lifestyle enthusiasts.
A highlight of the weeklong event was the auction of Saturday night, January 19, when a limited edition 40th Anniversary Ford Shelby GT500KR “King of the Road” Mustang coupe—and matching Fender Stratocaster guitar—raised $550,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Check it out at Modern Guitars.

‘Guitar Hero III’ leads Aerosmith’s Perry to gigs with sons’ band. Perry, as it turns out, isn’t a good gamer. But the game did bring about something good for the 57-year-old rock star — a chance to play live with his sons’ band, TAB. Photo is from their summer concert in my home town Paso Robles, Ca. When Stephen Dadaian first heard about Slash's "Ultimate Guitar Showdown" held by Music Nation, he disregarded it. He figured that the contest, in which the famous guitarist would handpick the best submitted guitar solo out of thousands of entries, was not anything to be concerned about, and nearly shrugged off his chances of winning. On a whim, Dadaian decided to set up a camcorder in his room and perform a largely improvised, blistering guitar solo. Out of 2,000 entries, his solo claimed the prize, and earned him a new Gibson Les Paul guitar and Marshall Half Stack amp. 1/22/08
Let’s face it, Guitar Hero is not nearly enough for some would be Rock stars out there. To them, everything needs to have the ability to be plucked, strummed and otherwise abused musically and the air guitar only gets you so far before people start avoiding you like the plague. This is for those people.
The PocketGuitar is a virtual guitar for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It was developed as a Google Code project by Shinya Kasatani. You can also use the songs on your iPod for those long guitar sessions. Apparently, it’s very easy to install. Now you’ll have a whole new way to annoy those around you, while getting your guitar action on.
You can thank me later, after your hand cramps up. Surely this is the Golden Age of man or something, when you can play a phone like a guitar and it’s considered not all that unusual. link this

Kind of a slow post day so I thought I would include a picture of  one of my guitars on which I custom painted the headstock. It's a custom cut-away acoustic made by the Rico brothers at B.C. Rich circa 1990 or so - 1/19/08

From The Steampunk Workshop.
"I have a Fender US Highway One series Stratocaster, which is a half decent guitar, but looks just like a million other Strats.  I had been planning to replace the pick guard with a black mother of pearl guard but my experiments in electrolytic etching made me think I'd like to try something a bit more unique.  Thus the Steampunk Strat was born."
SWEET! Really seeing a lot more of this nostalgic, Jules Vernish type stuff. I like.

Designer Amit Zoran working on his objective to examine a space for structural innovation for acoustic instruments, has designed this precise concept of an acoustic guitar sound box that exudes a unique sound through a CAD/CAM process. This has enabled players to tailor their own sound by putting together different sound cells, like the physical parts of the instruments designed in CAD/CAM rather than considering the instrument as one big sound box. It helps achieving the desired sound by allowing each string to have its own bridge so that later each bridge can be linked to different cells. By altering the cell size, material or structure, one can create customizable sounds. Seems like a hell of a lot of work to play Kumbiya, my Lord. Linkage 1/16/08

Back in 2003, two tech industry veterans (and part-time guitar players) got together to play some music. Frustrated while trying to find a tuner, Seth Demsey and Tom Lorimor hit upon the genesis of an idea: Why wasn’t there a tuner available ‘onboard’ the guitar?
With that question, Zero Crossing’s debut product, the patent pending N-Tune Onboard Chromatic Tuner, was born. Fast forward to 2008, and N-Tune announces the world’s most convenient solution for fast, accurate guitar tuning—on stage, in studio or wherever. The concept is simple: just pull your guitar’s volume knob up, silently tune up in seconds then push it back down to play. Sounds good n-works good too!

Iranian musician invented 'guitar'
The renowned Iranian guitarist and historian of music, Mohsen Danesh believes the classical guitar is a genuine Persian invention. The flamenco guitarist claims the instrument was invented by an Iranian musician named Zaryab Shirazi. Danesh said historical facts showed Zaryab who was a talented musician, made the guitar by changing the strings on a lute, a similar musical instrument. He later introduced the instrument to Spain and North Africa after establishing the first Andalusian music school in Cordoba. Zaryab is known for his contributions to Spanish music. Paco de Lucia, a famous flamenco guitarist has named one of his compositions after him. I smell bullshit.

Los Angeles musician and artist Stephen McSwain makes awesome custom guitars. Tired of seeing the same old guitars, Stephen decided to create a new breed of guitars he called "functional art." The results are fantastic, one of a kind guitars that are truly masterpieces. For example, here’s the Wicked Witch of the West guitar. Check this wild guitar the kid in the back is playing as his girlfriend enjoys a nutritious nitrous whippit. Looks to be some kind of archtop guitar rigged to play through a megaphone or some such shit. They have electricity or so it would seem, sometimes, so it probably runs on batteries as well. They are a group of modern-day hobos, riding the rails and living in a shanty house along the tracks. Thanks to the Polaroid Kid 1/10/08

Musician has his name changed to "The Dan Miller Experience"
The young man formerly known as Daniel Michael Miller II insists the name change isn't a tactic to pick up women. He says he's been turned off by the commonality of his name. There are dozens of licensed drivers in the Akron area alone named Daniel Miller, but there's no one else named Experience.

Crossroads - Eric Clapton Guitar Festival (2007)
This is a remarkable two-DVD collection that almost gives you the feeling of being in the front row. Well, turn up the sound a bit and you will feel like you’re there at
Eric Clapton’s second daylong bash celebrating the guitar, blues and blues-based music. It took place on July 27, 2007 at a Chicago stadium. There are so many performers that even an avid fan could be at a loss to know to them all. Never fear. Check out the web site for bios and links. My only caveat is the lack of information on the supporting musicians. Some of the band members are identified (as with Derek Trucks’ outstanding ensemble) but many are not. Who were all those backing players and singers on the final set?
