Metallica will make its first in-store appearance in nearly a decade on April 19, as part of Record Store Day, a promotional event for independent music retailers. In addition to promoting the vinyl re-release of the band’s classic albums “Kill ’Em All” and “Ride the Lightning,” Metallica’s appearance is meant to bolster the indie record store community. The band will participate in a signing and meet-and-greet at Rasputin Music’s Mountain View store, near San Francisco. 3/20/08

Rock stars are known for their excesses, but Led Zeppelin’s guitar player, Jimmy Page, reluctantly admits his limitations. The British newspaper The Guardian reported that Page had to slow down his most expensive hobby: collecting pre-Raphaelite art works and will sell his enormous tapestry of the Holy Grail.
Page’s friend, Raul Reeves, told the newspaper that Page has not enough space on his walls for the tapestry in any of his many houses. According to Reeves, Sotherby’s auctioneer will sell the tapestry by painter Edward Burn-Jones. They expect to raise the price up to one million pounds.
Page will also sell other art works inspired by King Arthur. Over the Links and Far Away

If your love of rock and pop music is married to a sense of exploration, the annual South by Southwest Festival is heaven. Last week, some 1,700 acts and bands performed at 80 venues here over four days and nights. You checked into your hotel and you wandered, and soon you learned that while the recording industry may be in chaos, there's plenty of music that continues to thrill. Linkxas 3/19/08

Sexy food-porn star Rachael Ray cooked up a rock 'n' roll bash in Austin, Texas – drawing revelers to the annual South by Southwest music festival. While Ray served up food, her husband's band, the Cringe, provided the music. Cusimano even gave his wife a shout-out from the stage. At one point, he told the crowd, "I wrote this next song about my wife, called 'Burn,' but it doesn’t have anything to do with her cooking," prompting laughter from the packed club. Later in Cringe's set, Cusimano was joined by surprise musical guest Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top who jumped onstage, grabbed his guitar and just started playing along, going into full-out rock mode. The crowd went wild, and Ray danced and cheered near the front of the stage. 3/17/08

An oak cask from Lagavulin distillery on Islay, one of Scotland's famous whisky islands, has been given a second life in the form of three hand-crafted guitars built by Manne Guitars, Italy. They will be unveiled at this month's Frankfurt Music Fair (12-15 March, Frankfurt am Main, Germany).
The cask was donated by the distillery, and arrived in the Manne workshop earlier this year still drenched with the complex peat-smoke aromas that are the hallmark of this single malt whisky. Drinklink

The new BH100H "Hothead" ($649.99 U.S. street price, shipping in May) from Blackheart Engineering takes the basic plug-and-play attitude of a world-class, 100-watt workhorse head, then shoves in enough jaw-dropping features to make it the most flexible amp in its class, not to mention several classes up. What's cool is the ability to switch from 100, 60, 50 or 30 watts. With 2 channels (Loud and Fucking Loud) you'll have plenty of options. Heartlink 3/13/08

The Boss’s show on Monday night at Long Island’s ramshackle Nassau Coliseum was all about the guitar –specifically, Nils Lofgren’s guitar. Usually we have to listen to the "pirate" laying down the leads we have heard for decades. Springsteen has righted that wrong, simply by adding “Because the Night” to the set and freeing Nils for a monstrous three-minute guitar solo.

Guitar Rig 3 Turns a Mac Into an Amp Stack. Spicing up a guitar's sound with just the right amplifier and effects can cost quit a lot of money -- not to mention a whole lot of garage space -- if one does it the old-fashioned way by buying bulky equipment. For musicians who don't mind doing it all through a computer, though, Guitar Rig 3 from Native Instruments offers a diverse and incredibly easy-to-use array of effects, sounds and possibilities. Bang Camaro, a Boston based arena rock collective have combined the organic and inclusive nature of Broken Social Scene with what their lead guitarist Alex Necochea calls "face melting solos." At any given time the band could have up to 15 lead singers on stage, belting out the powerful (and repetitive) choruses. In fact, the songs don't seem to be much more than guitar solos and choruses. If you've seen clips of Bo Diddley performances from the early 60s, you'll surely have noticed the presence of one or more female guitarists on stage, churning out that chunky six-string rhythm alongside the esteemed Mr. Diddley. Might've been Lady Bo that you've seen or heard, or it might've been The Duchess. Either way, hats off to some fine guitarists: women who filled a job category generally reserved (especially at that time) for the menfolk. The Duchess played a sweet ol' Gretsch Jupiter Thunderbird! Great interview with Kaki King at Pop Matters. King's style combines fret-tapping with slap bass techniques, using the guitar for percussional beats, as well as sound layering and looping, which creates a percussive and complex sound. It seems there's no stopping Sting's multi-talented daughter Coco. Just one month after being unveiled as the face (ouch and what a face) of Burberry, the 17-year-old is on the brink of signing a lucrative recording contract with her band I Blame Coco.

While "Guitar Hero" versions I, II and III are atop the best-selling video-game lists (albeit with no songs from King Crimson or Belew's solo work ---- what kid could play such intricate stuff anyway?), real-life guitar heroes have been a dying breed since grunge and alt rock took over the music charts in the 1990s. How about guitar picks made from meteorites? Will they make your guitar-playing sound better? Will they give you a meteoric improvement? Naturally, they are priced more than your standard cheap picks.
Each meteorite guitar pick is custom-made. The process goes as follows: Each pick is cut from meteorite material, then custom-shaped, ground and polished - and on request Meteorite Guitar Picks also do custom engraving. Because the entire process for each pick takes between 5-7 hours, they are not as cheap as your typical pick. But they are very unique -- you'll be the talk of the party!  meteorlink
